In June of 2012, the S.S. Keewatin returned to Port McNicoll after 46 years away from home (in the loving care of Douglas, Michigan). The whole community showed up to welcome her back.
So far, not many people have had access to the inside of the great luxury vessel. One month later, Huronia Museum was given a special tour by Ships Master Eric Conroy. Our cameras were rolling!
Here we present Part 1 of our tour featuring the car deck, the porter’s office and the grand staircase leading up to the Bridal Suites. And maybe you can get a haircut too, while you’re at it.

From an early age, Ethel Chynoweth learned to make native-style art from her mother. Working with beads, leather, porcupine quills and other materials, Ethel is able to express her creativity with one-of-a-kind, hand-made pieces. Much of her work (and exquisite porcupine quill boxes by her mother) are available to purchase in our Mundy’s Bay Gift Shop at the museum or in our online shop.

The Hallen family of Penetanguishene produced watercolour images of the area in the early half of the 19th Century. Their works not only showcase their considerable skills as artists, but also offer a glimpse of the social geography of the region. Huronia Museum hosts an extensive collection of Hallen paintings. In 2003, construction workers accidentally found a previously undiscovered Ouendat ossuary across the street from the Huronia Museum. Museum director Jamie Hunter explains more.
