filmoneIn Amreeka, the narrative revolves around protagonist Muna, a Palestinian woma n who is granted a green card to the United States and leaves her West Bank home. She sets off with her teenaged son, Fadi, and lands in small-town Illinois with her sister’s family.The journey, arrival and settlement in a foreign land, is riddled with problems and complications. Yet, despite the grim circumstances she encounters, in the end, Muna’s infectious optimism triumphs over the many obstacles she faces.

Director Filmography Cherien Dabis is a writer, director and producer. She was born in Palestine. Her first film was entitled The D Word (2005). Tonight’s screening of Amreeka (2009), which is Arabic for America, is her most recent work and is based on Alia Malek’s book A Country Called Amreeka: Arab Roots, American Stories.
