Everything Went Swimmingly

These pictures appeared in the October 20th, 1954 edition of the Free Press Herald on page 12.  It appears that the Awards ceremony was held in the basement of Bonar Presbyterian Church. Port McNicoll’s first Lions Club sponsored the swimming lessons for these young people. The captions that accompanied these photos are below each photo.

During the 1920’s and 30’s the CPR provided swimming lessons to village children through the Canadian Pacific Recreation Club. I’ve included a completion certificate awarded to my Great-Uncle, George Crooke, verifying that he had achieved standing as a Junior Advanced Swimmer in the summer of 1932

The Good Old Game

2006 0020 2027.JPGThis photo appeared on page 10 of the Free Press Herald, January 25th, 1956 along with the following caption:
Hockey isn’t just for the boys in Port McNicoll. Getting ready for a scrimmage with the boys at the community rink are; Nancy & Mary Calvert, Marilyn Newton, Sheila Armstrong and Diane Wilcox.

The Port McNicoll Community Rink was located at the corner of Main (Talbot) Street and First Avenue. It was also home to the Port McNicoll Curling Club and served as an indoor storage facility for cars of those travelling to the lake head aboard SS Keewatin or SS Assiniboia during the summer months.

Can anyone supply information about the secret room?

A New Post Office

2006 0020 43802006 0020 4375These photos appeared in the Midland Free Press, April 23rd, 1958, page 2, and were accompanied by the following caption:
First new commercial building to be erected in Port McNicoll in some years, work on the new post office is now well underway. Located on Fourth Ave., the new building will also contain the residence of Postmaster and Mrs. John (Patsy) Reedy. Mr. Reedy is shown in the lower photo painting door frames.

The background of the first photo shows the garage, since demolished, belonged to the Calvert building. Next to the garage we see the Garneau house in the background. Mr. Reedy’s hat is partially obscuring the house built by Jack and Ruth (Crooke) Lever, moving to the right is the house belonging to Agnes and Alphonse Maheu who had recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and 45 years of living in Port McNicoll.

The second photo also shows a great deal of detail. The back of Mr. Zoloty’s shoe repair shop and home. Mr. Zoloty was also a commercial photographer in a time when few people would own a camera. The west side of the Vasey Hardware building can also be seen in the background.
